How to decide between a regular sleep sack and a sleep sack with legs

If your toddler is still sleeping in a crib, a regular sleep sack that contains their feet is your best bet.

This is because it’s a lot harder for a child to climb out of a crib when their legs are contained in a sleep sack.

(That said, if your toddler is able to climb out or has met the height limit of 35″, it’s no longer safe to use the crib).

If your child is already sleeping in a toddler bed, it may be more practical to put them in a sleep sack with legs. That way, if they get out of bed, they’re able to walk more easily.

Many toddlers are able to walk in regular sleep sacks too, but you’ll have to make a judgment call about whether they’re likely to trip and fall.

If you’re not sure which one to choose, grab one of the cheapest toddler sleep sacks and see how your little one does. If it doesn’t work, you can always get a different kind.

When to stop using a sleep sack

The good news is that, unlike swaddling, there are no age or developmental limitations for using a sleep sack.

You can use a sleep sack all through toddlerhood… and beyond, if you can find ones that are large enough!

How to dress your toddler for sleep

Dressing a toddler for sleep is a lot easier than dressing a baby for sleep for two reasons:

  • You don’t have to worry about overheating as it relates to SIDS.
  • Most toddlers are able to communicate (in one way or another) whether they are too hot or too cold.

That said, the general guidelines for layering clothing underneath a sleep sack are the same for babies and toddlers.

It’s best to dress your toddler appropriately based on the temperature of the room. Avoid over-bundling.

Pay attention to verbal or non-verbal cues that your toddler is too warm or too cold and adjust accordingly.

FAQs about wearable blankets for toddlers

“What if my toddler is unzipping their sleep sack?”

Here are two awesome hacks to try if your toddler is unzipping (or unsnapping) their sleep sack:

  • Turn the sleep sack backwards.
  • Turn the sleep sack inside out.

Works like a charm 🙂

“Can a sleep sack prevent my toddler from climbing out of the crib?”

Prevent?

No.

Deter?

Yes.

If your toddler has already figured out (or almost figured out) how to climb out of their crib—or if they’ve met the 35″ height limit—it’s time to switch to a toddler bed.

A sleep sack will not keep a determined toddler from climbing out of their crib, particularly if they’ve already figured out the mechanics of doing so.

That said, if your toddler is still under 35 inches tall, a sleep sack does make it a lot harder to climb out, so this works in your favor if climbing has never been an option.

My toddler hasn’t spent any time in his crib without a sleep sack—or at least, not in forever. He’s never tried to climb out—probably because he doesn’t ever have his legs free in there.

“When switching to a toddler bed, should my toddler still use a sleep sack?

This really comes down to your personal preference.

Many parents choose to use a sleep sack because their toddler doesn’t keep their blanket on and struggles to cover themselves back up.

From a safety perspective, once a child is sleeping in a toddler bed, it’s generally considered low-risk to give them a small lightweight blanket to sleep with.

That said, it’s still better to wait until your child turns 2 to provide a blanket, as there have been bedding-related deaths reported up to 2 years old.

Final thoughts on the best sleep sacks for toddlers

No matter your budget, the age of your toddler, or the temperature inside their room, there are tons of great options for toddler sleep sacks.

If it’s within your means, it’s wise to have 2 or 3 sleep sacks on hand, just in case one gets wet or dirty.

It’s also a good idea to have toddler sleep sacks of different weights so you’re prepared for any range of temperatures.

Wishing you and your toddler sweet dreams!
